Hindu Priests built an ecologically sustainable irrigation system here over a thousand years ago that is still used today. Coffee Farmers of Kintamani have incorporated shade (albizia, erythrina) and crop producing shade trees (Tangerine, Orange) with their coffee plants to improve both yields and cup quality. Kintamani Highland Farmers are Culturally, agriculturally, and religiously structured following the Hindu philosophy of "Tri Hita Karana" The Three Causes of Happiness. It makes great sense that coffees of this region are organic as the Three Happiness's relate to the Grower's relationship with God, Relationship with Others, and Relationship with the Environment. Each Subak Abian Group of Farmers democratically establishes it's own rules and village Coop.
